Russia claims to have captured a city in the Donetsk region

Russian forces claimed to have taken control of an eastern Ukrainian city where Ukrainian defenses were breached two weeks ago.

Ukraine has yet to comment on Russia's May 5 claim that it has taken control of Ocheretne.

If confirmed, it would follow Ukraine's recent setbacks on the battlefield, as Ukrainian forces fighting an invasion launched by Russia in 2022 face shortages of soldiers and ammunition.

In a daily briefing, the Russian Defense Ministry said that troops from the Central Command group took control of the city. However, this ministry did not provide more details.

In Ocheretne, Russian troops managed to break through Ukrainian defense lines after, according to observers, Kiev made a failed rotation of soldiers, which included units that have been active on the battlefield for a long time.

Since April 22, according to the data, Russian forces have advanced towards the west and north of this city. Last month, the US Congress approved $60 billion worth of military aid to Ukraine. But it will take time for weapons, ammunition, military vehicles and other equipment to reach the battlefield.

In Washington, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Russia is expected to make further advances "in the period ahead."

But on May 4, he told the Financial Times that Kiev will also have the capacity to "hold the front line and make sure it withstands Russian attacks" in 2024.

Ukraine, according to him, "intends to move towards recapturing the territory that the Russians have occupied"./ Rel
