Russia carries out deadly attacks in Ukraine

Russian missile strikes in Ukraine's Donetsk region have killed two people, while a drone strike in the northeastern city of Kharkiv has injured six others, officials said on May 5.

The attacks were carried out on the day when Orthodox Christians in Ukraine and Russia are celebrating Easter.

"In Porovsk, rocket attacks killed two people and damaged a house," the governor of the eastern Donetsk region, Vadim Filashkin, wrote on Telegram. Pokrovski is located about 60 kilometers northwest of the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk.

The Ukrainian air force said Russia carried out strikes with 24 Iranian-made Shahed drones during the oil spill, 23 of which were shot down.

"A house was burnt as a result of the attacks with Shahed. Six people were injured, including a 9-year-old girl," Kharkiv governor Oleg Synegubov wrote on Telegram.

In Russia and Ukraine, leaders have used the religious holiday to rally society around the war effort.

The Ukrainian president, Volodmyr Zelensky, through a video message recorded in the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, said that "we believe that God has an emblem on his shoulder with the flag of Ukraine. Therefore, with such an ally, life will conquer death."

Meanwhile, Putin, in his message for Easter, thanked Patriarch Kirill for "fruitful cooperation in this difficult time when it is very important for us to unite in our efforts for the development and strengthening of our homeland"./ Rel
