A series of explosions were heard overnight in the area where the military airbase is located in the town of Zhankoy in the north of Ukraine's Crimea region.

The Astra Telegram channel published several videos recorded by local residents showing large flames and plumes of smoke in the area where the airbase is reported to be located.

These reports could not be independently confirmed.

Russian authorities in Crimea did not immediately comment on these reports.

In Zhankoy there is a military air base where the helicopter regiment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and three aviation teams are stationed.

Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014.

Reports of explosions in Crimea come as air raid sirens were sounded in the Ukrainian regions of Kiev, Chernihiv, Sumy, Cherkassy and Potlava on April 17.

Shortly after the sirens were released, the air force said there was a risk of airstrikes in the regions of Zhitomir, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad and Kherson.

Russia has drastically intensified air attacks against Ukraine, while Ukrainian forces are facing a shortage of ammunition and air systems, as the war started by Russia has already entered its third year./ REL
