Explosions in North Mitrovica

The Kosovo Police has confirmed that during the late hours of the evening of June 22, two explosions occurred in North Mitrovica. There were no injuries from these explosions.

"There were detonations, they could be bombs or fireworks. There are no reports of damage or injuries", said the deputy regional director for the north, Veton Elshani, for Radio Free Europe.

Elshani said that, however, the situation in North Mitrovica and other municipalities in the north was calm during the night and that it continues to be so today.

Earlier this month, there were reports of bomb attacks near police stations in North Mitrovica and Zveçan.

These stun-bomb attacks are happening at a time when tensions in the north of Kosovo - inhabited by a majority of Serbs - have increased.

The tensions started on May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, under the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings, amid the opposition of the local Serbs.

Tensions culminated on May 29, when in Zveçan, Serbian protesters clashed with members of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. Dozens of people from both sides were injured in the clashes./ Rel
