The search for the tourist submarine Titanic enters the decisive phase

European ships are joining the race to find the missing Titanic tourist submarine as oxygen for the crew is expected to run out on Thursday morning local time.

Search efforts have intensified for the submarine that lost contact Sunday in the North Atlantic.

Experts say the oxygen for the five people aboard the Titan will probably run out Thursday morning local time.

"We have to remain optimistic and hopeful when you're in a search and rescue case. So we're in the middle of the search and rescue case. So I don't want to get into a discussion of when that's going to end in relation to this case ," said Capt. Jamie Frederick, response coordinator for the 1st Coast Guard District.

An international fleet of surveillance ships and aircraft is moving forward with ongoing search and rescue efforts.

They are prompted by more reports of a regular crashing noise in the deep ocean near the sunken Titanic.

Even if Titan is located in the North Atlantic, it may be nearly impossible to reach if it is stuck in the 12,500-foot (3,800-meter) depth near the Titanic's wreckage.

The US Coast Guard, which is leading the complex operation, has shifted its rescue efforts in response to the underwater soundings, but so far "has yielded negative results".

Authorities estimate that the ship has about 10 hours of oxygen left. Canadian authorities reported that the carbon fiber boat went missing late Sunday evening, prompting an international rescue effort in waters about 700 kilometers off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.

The submarine was on an expedition to visit the wreck of the Titanic, descending to a depth of about 3,800 meters.

On board were a pilot, a well-known British adventurer, two members of a Pakistani business family and a Titanic expert.

Titan had a 96-hour supply of oxygen when it launched around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to David Concannon, a consultant with OceanGate Expeditions, which oversaw the mission.

That means the oxygen supply could run out Thursday morning./ CNA
