Race against time to find the Titan submarine

The massive multinational search for the tourist submarine Titan with five people on board has entered its fifth day. The vessel dived to view the remains of the Titanic, which sank in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean in 1912, but lost contact with the vessel accompanying it less than two hours into the dive. According to the calculations, the people in it have only a few hours of oxygen left, which may end today.

The submarine Titan, which is operated by the private American company 'OceanGate Expeditions', sank on Sunday at 8 am near the Canadian coast. She lost contact with the vessel accompanying her at the end of what should have been a two-hour dive in the North Atlantic Ocean.

According to the company, the submarine had 96 hours of oxygen, which is likely to end today. Experts say the rate at which the oxygen will be reduced will depend on several factors, whether the submarine still has power, or how calm the people on board are, assuming the vessel is not damaged.

An underwater vehicle launched from a Canadian ship searched the ocean floor, the US Coast Guard said Thursday morning in a tweet.

Hopes were raised on Wednesday when the US Coast Guard announced that Canadian aircraft had recorded several underwater noises since Tuesday.

But US authorities said underwater vehicles searching where the noises were detected had returned no results, and officials warned the sounds may not have originated on Titan.

However, they added that the noise analysis was inconclusive.

Today, the French research ship 'Atalante' arrived in the research area, equipped with a robotic submersible, capable of reaching the depth where the remains of the Titanic are located, about 3,810 meters below the surface of the ocean.

The Victor 6000 robot is equipped with remote controllable arms that help free a stranded ship or can attach it to a ship for towing. The US Navy announced that it was sending a special rescue vehicle, which serves to raise large underwater objects./ VOA
