The volcano in Iceland erupts for the second time in a few months

A volcano in southwest Iceland erupted on Thursday, just two months after a previous eruption forced residents of the coastal town of Grindavik to evacuate.

The eruption began around 6:00 a.m. local time, spewing lava along a three-kilometer-long fissure northeast of Mount Sundhnukur, Iceland's Meteorological Office said.

The Coast Guard said the explosion occurred in the same area where the Dec. 18 explosion occurred.

The Meteorological Office emphasized that the lava was flowing westward and that for now there is no danger to the town of Grindavik - which was evacuated from the volcano at the end of the year - or to the large power plant in this part of the country.

Iceland's public broadcaster RUV said the Blue Lagoon spa, one of Iceland's biggest tourist attractions, was closed shortly after the volcano erupted and that visitors were evacuated to hotels.

This is the third eruption since December of a volcano system in Reykjanes Gadhisulli, where Keflavik, Iceland's main airport, is also located. No disruptions to flights were reported on Thursday.

In Iceland, a volcano erupts every four to five years on average. In 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, the largest in recent years, releasing large ash clouds into the atmosphere, which caused the closure of airspace across Europe.

The town of 3,800 people near Iceland's main airport was evacuated on November 10 when a series of earthquakes triggered ground cracks between Grindavik and Sylingarfell, a small alpine town in the north.

The volcano finally erupted on December 18, spewing lava in the direction of Grindavik. A second eruption occurred on January 14, and its lava flowed toward the city.

The protective walls that were strengthened after the first eruption stopped part of the lava, but some buildings were swallowed by the lava./ REL
