Russia, new missile attacks on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities

Russia has carried out a series of missile attacks on Kiev and other Ukrainian cities during the morning of February 7, Ukrainian officials announced.

Some parts of the capital have been left without power as a result of the attacks, officials said.

A series of explosions were heard in Kiev during the attack, which is the first in February. Air defense was engaged to destroy the Russian missiles, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitscho said on Telegram.

At least two people were injured in the Dniprovsk region, which lies along the Dnieper River, Klitschko added.

Sirens went off across Ukraine around 6 a.m. when the Ukrainian Air Force warned on Telegram about the possibility of Russian missile strikes across the country.

The first explosions were heard shortly before 7 am in Kiev.

"I was scared when the sirens went off, and we came running here," Tetyana, a 49-year-old sheltering in central Kiev, told Reuters.

"I hope they will shoot down all [missiles]. I pray for our protection", she added, while hugging her two-year-old granddaughter and a small dog.

The extent of the impact of these attacks was not immediately known.

Ukraine's largest energy company, DTEK, said the Dniprovsk region was partially without power. Klitschko said falling shrapnel from the downed Russian missiles damaged several power lines.

Oleh Synehubov, the governor of the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine, said that Russian missiles hit non-residential infrastructure in the city of Kharkiv, the central administration of this region./ REL
