German union calls on Lufthansa staff to go on strike again

The workers' union, Verdi, has called on the ground staff of the Lufthansa company in Germany to go on strike on Wednesday.

Airports in Germany's Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Düsseldorf will be affected, a spokesman for the workers' union said early Monday.

"All ground staff, from maintenance to handling passengers and aircraft, have been called on strike," Verdi wrote in a statement on February 5, adding that "there could be major flight cancellations and delays."

The strike follows ongoing Lufthansa Group wage negotiations and concerns around 25,000 ground crew employees at Deutsche Lufthansa, Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo.

The employers' offer, in the second round of negotiations on January 23, was rejected. The proposed salary increase was considered too low.

On February 1, Verdi asked security staff to go on strike at several major airports.

Thursday's strike was called to demand a pay rise of 2.80 euros an hour for around 25,000 workers at private aviation security firms.

The companies had rejected the request considering it too expensive. According to them, such an increase would cost 250 million euros per year. Collective bargaining talks are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 6.

On Friday last week, February 2nd, Verdi's ground staff went on strike at Hamburg Airport, also demanding a pay rise.

In February last year, a 24-hour strike at seven German airports affected the flights of nearly 300,000 passengers as labor unions demanded higher wages./ REL
