US official: US may hit more targets in Middle East

Hussein al-Mosawi, spokesman for Harakat al-Nujaba, one of the main Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, softened his tone Saturday by calling for a reduction in tensions in the Middle East, following the US strikes in Iraq and Syria.

Washington took this step in response to the attack on a military base in Jordan, where three American soldiers were killed and about 40 others were wounded. The US struck dozens of targets in Iraq and Syria used by Iran-backed groups and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

In an interview with the Associated Press in Baghdad, Hussein al-Mosawi first condemned the US attacks, saying that Washington "must understand that every action causes a reaction". But then he chose a more conciliatory tone, saying that: "we do not wish to escalate or expand regional tensions."

Syrian state media reported casualties as a result of the attacks, but did not provide any figures. Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said 23 people, all fighters from the groups, had been killed.

Iraqi government spokesman Bassim al-Awadi said in a statement on Saturday that as a result of the attacks in Iraq near the border with Syria, 16 people had been killed, including civilians. According to him, "significant" material damage was caused, including residential buildings.

A US official said on Saturday that an initial damage assessment showed the United States had hit every one of the targets it had planned, except for some "dynamic, moving targets" that appeared as the mission began. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not provide information on possible casualties as a result of the attacks.

The United States has blamed the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a coalition of militias backed by Iran, for the attack in Jordan last week.

Meanwhile, Iran has tried to distance itself from the attack, saying that the militias act without receiving orders from Tehran./ VOA
