Syria against the USA: With the latest attacks, it is threatening international

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has condemned overnight US strikes against targets in Iraq and Syria.

In a statement, distributed by the Sana news agency, it is said that the US attacks have proved "once again that its military forces threaten international peace and security and fuel conflict in the region".

The Syrian government opposes the American presence in its country, calling it an occupation.

Syria was reinstated as a member of the influential Arab League last year, more than a decade after it was expelled for its brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests that led to civil war. 

The reaction from the Syrian government comes as the US launched strikes on 85 targets in Syria and Iraq in response to Sunday's drone strike on a US military base that killed three soldiers.

Three US soldiers were killed and more than 40 personnel were injured in a drone attack on a US base called "Tower 22".

Authorities in the US announced that its forces carried out airstrikes against Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force and militia groups. /CNA
