EU proposes tougher rules against child abuse and pornography

The European Commission has proposed stricter criminal rules to combat the sexual abuse and exploitation of children, including banning the broadcast of pornography and the inclusion of abuse material in fake news or other material generated by artificial intelligence.

"Sexual abuse of children is a terrible crime that has increased significantly in recent years," the Commission said on February 6.

Both the increase in children's online presence and rapid technological developments have created new opportunities for abuse, culminating in 1.5 million reports of child sexual abuse in the European Union in 2022.

"The threat of abuse is real and has increased across the EU," the EC said.

The proposed new rules would adapt those passed in 2011 and expand the definition of offenses related to child abuse, including internet transmissions and content generated by artificial intelligence.

The EC has also proposed extending the time period for victims to report abuse and giving them the right to be financially compensated.

EU member states will be asked to step up measures to prevent abuse, such as by making children aware of the dangers online.

The European Parliament and the member states must agree on these proposals, so that they can enter into force./ REL
