Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands: Beijing does not allow cyber attacks

Beijing will not allow any Chinese entity or individual to carry out illegal activities, such as cyber attacks, or use Chinese facilities for such attacks, said a statement released Wednesday by the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands.

The Chinese embassy's reaction comes after a report by Dutch intelligence agencies accused Chinese state-backed cyber spies of hacking into a Dutch military network last year. This is the first time the Netherlands has accused China of cyber espionage.

"China opposes any malicious speculation and baseless accusations, and advocates joint efforts to protect cyber security through dialogue and cooperation ," an embassy spokesman was quoted as saying in the statement.

These are the latest accusations from a country that claims Beijing tried to hack sensitive data. On Monday, the Philippines said it had foiled a cyber attack by Chinese hackers.

According to a report by Reuters news agency, in recent months the US government launched an operation to combat a widespread Chinese hacking attack that compromised thousands of Internet-connected devices.

The hacker group at the center of the latest activity, Volt Typhoon, has particularly alarmed intelligence officials who say the cyberattack is part of a broader effort to compromise critical Western infrastructure, including seaports, service providers internet and utilities.

The spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands said that, "The Chinese government in accordance with the law has always opposed and resolutely attacked all forms of cyber attacks"./ VOA
