Head of the Munich Security Conference: Russia may attack NATO

A Russian attack on any of NATO's member states cannot be ruled out, Christoph Heusgen, head of the Munich Security Conference, said in a statement on Saturday, days before a gathering of world leaders and defense experts in this German city.

Asked if he thought Russian President Vladimir Putin could order such an attack, Heusgen said yes.

"Putin has repeated that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century, because it resulted in many Russians remaining outside Russia's borders."

He has said that Putin aims to recreate a Greater Russia with the former borders of the Soviet Union, to become a global empire that he could lead as czar.

"If Putin doesn't lose the war in Ukraine, we have to consider that he can rob Moldova or the Baltic republics," he said.

Heusgen declined to speculate on what Putin will do.

"Well, we must do everything to ensure that Ukraine receives the weapons and military assistance it needs to successfully resist the Russian aggressors and remove them from the national territory," he said.

Heusgen has served as a foreign policy advisor to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in the period 2007-2017, throughout almost her entire leadership.

He was then appointed ambassador of Germany to the United Nations, before being appointed head of the Munich conference.

Speaking to a Republican American moderator, Tucker Carlson, this week, Putin said that Russia has no territorial ambitions regarding Poland and Latvia.

He has said that a Russian invasion of these NATO countries can only happen if Poland attacks Russia.

The Munich Security Conference will be held on February 16-18, and 50 world leaders are expected to attend.

No invitations have been sent to Russia and Iran./ REL
