US orders removal of some government personnel from several Middle Eastern

The US State Department has ordered the mandatory removal of non-emergency US government personnel and their family members from Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, Qatar and Kuwait due to security concerns.

The State Department noted that personnel in Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait face a continuing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran, as well as significant disruptions to commercial flights. The State Department also warns of a risk of terrorist attacks in Jordan and Bahrain, and notes elevated risks of violence and kidnappings in Iraq.

The order to force the removal of non-emergency personnel from the three embassies is the first since the US and Israel launched military operations against Iran. They speak to the heightened level of security risks across the region as Iran retaliates - with a particular focus on US military and diplomatic facilities.

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia was hit by two suspected Iranian drones Tuesday night, and two others struck near the Riyadh compound. The U.S. Embassy in Kuwait was also hit. Multiple U.S. embassies across the region have issued shelter-in-place orders for staff since the war began — and have urged American citizens to do the same. The ordered evacuations do not mean the embassies are closing, although the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait announced Tuesday that it would be closed until further notice.

Other embassies will leave only a small group of key staff at each diplomatic compound, while the US State Department is urging US citizens throughout the Middle East to leave. Most citizens will not be able to leave immediately, as many airlines have suspended flights to the region. The US government has not started evacuation flights for its citizens. /CNA
