Russia calls for more evacuations after Ukraine's surprise attack

An official in Russia's border region of Kursk urged residents to evacuate because of the "very tense situation" in the area, where Russian forces are struggling to respond to a surprise Ukrainian attack.

Emergency authorities in Russia said more than 76,000 people have fled their homes in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops and armored vehicles broke into Russian territory seven days ago. They are reported to have advanced to a depth of 30 kilometers inside Russia.

The Ukrainian operation is taking place in great secrecy and its objectives remain unclear. The surprise maneuver that caught Kremlin forces off guard is in response to repeated Russian efforts in recent months to hit Ukrainian defenses in certain areas along the front line in eastern Ukraine.

The advance of Ukrainian troops has dealt a blow to President Putin's efforts and his claims that the war has generally not affected life in Russia. State propaganda has tried to downplay the attack, pointing to the authorities' efforts to help the region's residents and aiming to deflect attention from the army's failure to prepare for the attack and quickly repel it.

Residents in Kursk recorded videos complaining about being forced to leave their homes and calling on President Putin to help them. Russian state media did not report any signs of discontent.

During two and a half years of fighting, Russia has faced surprise attacks inside the territory before, but the swift and surprise attack in the Kursk region marks the largest attack on Russian soil since World War II, putting President Vladimir Putin and marking an important step in the fighting.

Also, it is the first time that the surprise attack is led by the Ukrainian army and not by pro-Ukrainian Russian fighters./ VOA
