Paris capped two and a half weeks of the Olympic Games with fireworks with a raucous, star-studded display at France's national stadium, handing hosting duties for the 2028 Summer Games to the next city, Los Angeles.

In a performance of the Hollywood spectacle, actor Tom Cruise descended from the top of the French stadium to the soundtrack of the film "Mission Impossible", shaking hands with athletes before receiving the Olympic flag from athlete Simone Biles. placing it on the back of the motorcycle and leaving the stadium.

In a pre-recorded ride near the Eiffel Tower, actor Cruise rode a motorcycle onto a plane and then parachuted over the Hollywood Hills.

This was just one of the highlights of the closing ceremony of the Games.

For Los Angeles, it may be mission impossible to overtake Paris. The French capital took advantage of the spectacular scenery for its first Games in 100 years. The Eiffel Tower and other iconic landmarks became Olympic stars in their own right, serving as backdrops and in some cases venues for the competitions.

In a speech, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who stood alongside French President Emmanuel Macron during the performance, said the Games "can create a cultural peace that inspires the world," noting that athletes "respected each other even if your countries are torn apart by conflicts".

The national stadium, France's largest, was one of the targets of the Islamic State suicide bombers, who killed 130 people in and around Paris on November 13, 2015. The joy and celebrations that swept Paris during the Games, as athlete Leon Marchand and other French athletes collected 64 medals, 16 of them gold, marked an important point in the city's recovery from that night of terror.

The United States once again topped the medal table, with 126 total and 40 of them gold. Albania and Kosovo secured two Olympic medals each./ Voa
