Russia suspends search for 13 trapped miners

Russian emergency workers on Monday completed a rescue operation at a mine in the country's far east where 13 workers have been trapped for two weeks, state media reported.

A landslide on March 18 at the Pioneer gold mine in Russia's Amur region near the Chinese border trapped miners more than 120 meters underground.

Initial search operations showed that the caves where they may have taken shelter had flooded, raising fears that the 13 miners had been killed by the landslide.

"On April 1, a decision was made to end the rescue operation at the Pioneer mine," operator Pokrovsky Mine said in a statement quoted by the Interfax news agency.

"The results of the drilling showed that the areas where the miners could be located are filled with rock mass and water. The lives of rescuers and mine workers involved in the operation are at risk," due to the possibility of another collapse, he added.

The gold mine is one of the largest in the world and one of the most productive in Russia.

Officials in Amur have opened an investigation into a suspected breach of security rules.

The managing director was arrested last week, said the regional branch of Russia's Investigative Committee, which investigates major crimes.

Mining accidents are relatively common in Russia, where lax safety standards and lax enforcement have been blamed for numerous tragedies.

In 2021, an accident in a coal mine in Siberia took the lives of 40 miners./ VOA
