Yesterday Turkey went to local elections, causing 61 million people to go to the polls.

When only a few hours have passed since voting closed, more than 94% of ballot boxes have been opened.

The largest opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP) leads with 37.32% of the votes against President Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AK), which so far has 35.78% of the votes, reports Anadolu.

CHP took 14 cities and 21 provinces, AK took 12 cities and 12 provinces, IYY Party took only 1 province, MHP took 8 provinces and DEM/HDP took 3 cities and 7 provinces.

Erdogan has again lost the two largest municipalities of the country, such as Ankara and Istanbul.

CHP candidate Mayor Mansur Yavas declared victory, saying "the election is over and we will continue to serve Ankara."

While the leader of the CHP, Ozgür Ozel, said that: "There are no losers in this victory. Our success is not a loss for anyone."

On the other hand, the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declared that the country concluded the local elections in "the manner befitting a democracy".

Erdogan said that his AK party "did not get the result it wanted and hoped for" in these elections, but emphasized that "there is nothing greater than the power of the will of the nation"./ CNA
