New era in Germany/ Legalization of cannabis for adults comes into force

In Germany today (01.04.) a new era in drug policy begins. According to the new law, persons from the age of 18 are allowed under certain conditions to possess certain amounts of cannabis and to cultivate and consume it privately.

Adults aged 18 and over are allowed to possess 25 grams in public. Inside the apartment, up to 50 grams of privately cultivated are allowed. Private cultivation of up to three cannabis plants is allowed. Starting from July 1, 2024, the creation of cannabis clubs to cultivate it collectively is also allowed.

With the entry into force of this law, cannabis is removed from the list of prohibited substances in the Law on Narcotic Substances, but the sale and distribution of cannabis continue to be prohibited by law.

Strict police checks

Police representatives expect that the partial legalization of cannabis on April 1 will increase the workload of police officers. Some of the federal states will carry out more checks. The police of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, for example, announced that they wanted to increase checks on road traffic to see if drivers are under the influence of cannabis. According to the Ministry of the Interior of this country, this aims to reduce as much as possible the risk of accidents in road traffic.

Police in other countries intend to gradually expand traffic checks related to the use of cannabis by drivers. Efforts to identify cannabis dealers will also be increased to protect especially children, young people and teenagers./ DW
