Russia's Foreign Ministry announced that it will consider extending the Black Sea wheat agreement only if the concerns of its agricultural producers are addressed.

The grain deal between Ukraine and Russia, which was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, is due to expire this month, but Russia has signaled it is unhappy with some aspects of the deal and may not re-sign it.

"(The) Russian side emphasized that the continuation of the wheat package agreement is only possible if the interests of Russian agricultural producers are taken into account and there is unhindered access to world markets," the statement said. This agreement, which allows the safe export of wheat from Ukrainian ports, was reached in July last year.

Through it, a protected maritime transit corridor was created and designed to alleviate global food shortages by allowing the resumption of exports from three ports in Ukraine.

Ukraine is the seventh largest producer of wheat in the world and is projected to be the fifth largest exporter for the years 2021 - 2022.

In 2021, Ukrainian wheat exports were estimated at $5.1 billion, with Egypt, Indonesia, Turkey, Pakistan and Bangladesh as the main destinations./ Rel
