Russia: We have taken measures against terrorism in three regions

Russia has begun implementing counter-terrorism measures in Kursk, the region where the Ukrainian army has launched an incursion, as well as in two nearby regions, Bryansk and Belgorod.

The announcement was made in the early hours of August 10 by the National Committee against Terrorism.

In the statement, it was announced that the decision was taken by the head of the intelligence service of the Federal Security Service (FSB), as a response to Ukraine's "unprecedented attempt" to "destabilize the situation in some regions".

On August 9, Russia declared what it described as a "federal-level" emergency in the Kursk region, hours after the Ukrainian army attacked.

In response to the incursion, the Russian Defense Ministry said on August 9 that it would transfer additional forces to the region, including Grad missile systems, artillery and tanks, Russian news agency Interfax reported.

The state media has also reported on the positioning of the Russian army in Kursk, as well as published some images of the army moving in that region.

The entry of the Ukrainian army into the Russian border region has been described as the biggest attack on Russian soil since the start of Moscow's war in Ukraine in February 2022.

Not much is known about the Ukrainian incursion, although the Russian military has claimed that about 1,000 troops and dozens of tanks are involved.

Since the incursion began on August 6, Ukrainian military troops have gained control of about 600 square kilometers of territory, and more than a dozen settlements, according to local officials.

According to the August 10 announcement, the National Committee against Terrorism has said that the measures include the potential displacement of residents, the restriction of transportation, as well as increased security.

Ukrainian officials have not officially confirmed the operation, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenky said on August 8 that Russia should experience the consequences of an invasion.

"Russia brought war to our land and must experience what it has done," Zelensky said, without directly referring to the offensive.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
