New EU visa rule/ Change will target restrictions for Israeli citizens

Israel is expected to be one of the first countries targeted by a reform of the mechanism for suspending visa-free travel for short stays in EU and Schengen countries, approved on Tuesday by the European Parliament and the Council, according to European Parliament sources.

The new rules change the grounds for suspending visa-free schemes to include human rights violations, which could lead to the imposition of mandatory visas for Israeli citizens, among other things, sources from Parliament told foreign media.

Currently, citizens from 61 countries, including Australia, Brazil, Israel, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ukraine and the Western Balkan states, can travel to the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The EU can suspend the visa-free regime under specific conditions. So far, this has only happened once, with the Republic of Vanuatu, due to its citizenship-by-investment scheme, which gave wealthy Russians Vanuatu passports that allowed them free travel to the EU./CNA
