Iran's uranium base hidden under a mountain

The Fordow uranium enrichment base is located about 32 kilometers north of the city of Qom, below a mountain.

Built in 2009, it is one of Iran's most fortified facilities, with a depth of up to 300 meters underground, making it difficult to hit with conventional air strikes.

Fordow is used to enrich uranium to 60%, a level very close to that needed to produce nuclear weapons.

Israel considers Fordow to be a key facility in Iran's efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Because of its fortifications, conventional air strikes are not sufficient to destroy the facility.

For this reason, the use of powerful bombs, known as "bunker-busters", is an option to hit the object at depth. However, these bombs are mainly available to the US Air Force and require close cooperation between the two countries to use.

Iran has taken strong measures to protect Fordow. In 2022, Iranian authorities announced that they had prevented a sabotage attempt attributed to Israel, arresting several suspects. Iran has also continued to build new structures at the Fordow complex, making it an even more difficult target to strike.
