Israel-Iran conflict/ Pope Leo calls: Act with reason and sincere dialogue

Pope Leo XIV renewed the Church's calls for nuclear disarmament and peaceful dialogue following the outbreak of the Israel-Iran conflict. The Holy Father spoke of his growing concerns about the Middle East.

"The situation in Iran and Israel has seriously deteriorated. At such a delicate moment, I wish to strongly renew an appeal for responsibility and reason. Our commitment to building a safer world, free from the nuclear threat, must be pursued through respectful encounters and sincere dialogue," the Pope told pilgrims inside St. Peter's Basilica.

Leo XIV said that it is the duty of all countries to embark on paths of reconciliation and promote solutions, based on justice, fraternity and the common good, to build lasting peace and security in the region.

"No one should ever threaten the existence of another," the Pope said.

The open war between the two Middle Eastern nations entered its fifth day after Israel launched its initial deadly attack on June 13, just hours after Iran announced plans to activate its third nuclear facility./CNA
