Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview with ABC News, was asked about reports that President Trump shot down an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, on the grounds that killing him would escalate the conflict.
Netanyahu said that eliminating Khamenei would not worsen the conflict, but would end it.
" We have had half a century of widespread conflict from this regime that terrorizes everyone in the Middle East; it has bombed the Aramco oil fields in Saudi Arabia; it is spreading terrorism, subversion and sabotage everywhere. 'Forever war' is what Iran wants and they are bringing us to the brink of nuclear war. In fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, ending this aggression and we can only do that by confronting the forces of evil ," Netanyahu said.
Asked if Israel would indeed target the supreme leader, Netanyahu said Israel was "doing what it had to do."
" I won't go into details, but we have targeted their best nuclear scientists. It's basically Hitler's nuclear team ," Netanyahu said.
