The United Kingdom's MI6 spy agency has appointed its first female chief in its 116-year history, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced.
Blaise Metreweli, who is currently the foreign intelligence agency's director of technology and innovation, will take over from Richard Moore to become the 18th head of MI6.
The head of the agency, referred to as "C", is the only publicly appointed member of the organization and is responsible to the British foreign secretary.
Metreweli, 47, is a career intelligence officer who joined the service in 1999. The Cambridge University graduate has worked mainly in Europe and the Middle East, and has held senior-level positions in both MI6 and the domestic spy agency MI5.
Starmer, who announced Metrewel's appointment after arriving in Canada for the G7 summit, called her elevation to the post "historic," noting that it comes at a time when the work of intelligence services has never been more important./CNA
