Escalation of the conflict/ Thousands of people flee in a kilometer-long exodus from Tehran

The Iranian capital, Tehran, home to around 10 million people and one of the largest cities in the Middle East, has seen a mass exodus as the conflict with Israel intensifies.

On Tuesday, the city center began to empty, with many shops closed and the historic Grand Bazaar shuttered, something that had not happened since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A partial evacuation order by the Israeli military was issued to 330,000 people living in central Tehran early Monday. However, many of them had already begun to leave after the attacks over the weekend.

Traffic jams stretched for miles on roads leading out of the city, with many heading towards the Caspian Sea region.

Long queues also formed at petrol stations as residents rushed to get fuel, with limits of 25 litres of fuel per car now in place./CNA
