Fifth day of Israel-Iran conflict/ Senior commander Ali Shamdani killed

The Israel-Iran conflict has entered its fifth day. Explosions were heard over Tel Aviv and Jerusalem on Tuesday, shortly after air raid sirens were heard in parts of Israel following the launch of missiles from Iran, the Israeli military said.

The air force was "operating to intercept and strike where necessary to eliminate the threat," the military said.

About 20 minutes later, it said people could leave shelters as police reported debris falling in the Tel Aviv area and the fire brigade said it was dealing with a fire in the surrounding area.

The Israeli military said it killed top Iranian commander Ali Shamdani in an overnight strike on a command center in the heart of Tehran, four days after he replaced Gholam Ali Rashid, who was killed in an Israeli strike.

The attack targeted several missile and drone sites in western Iran, including infrastructure, launchers and storage facilities, with black-and-white footage showing some of them exploding.

Despite growing calls to de-escalate tensions, neither side has backed down from the missile attack that began on Friday, when Israel launched an unprecedented air campaign targeting Iranian nuclear and military facilities.

A new wave of Israeli attacks on Tehran, including a dramatic strike on the headquarters of state television that the broadcaster said killed three people, prompted both sides to activate missile defense systems overnight./CNA
