What does a US Navy aircraft carrier strike group consist of?

The US Navy is expected to have two aircraft carrier strike groups, one led by the USS Nimitz and the other by the USS Carl Vinson, available for emergencies in the Middle East.

The USS Nimitz carrier strike group left Southeast Asian waters on Monday to head to the region where it would join the USS Vinson carrier strike group, which has been in the Middle East as part of a roughly seven-month deployment, according to U.S. officials.

Here's a look at what a US aircraft carrier strike group brings:

Both the Nimitz and Vinson are Nimitz-class battleships, equipped with two nuclear reactors. At nearly 1,100 meters long and displacing nearly 100,000 tons, they are among the largest warships in the world, accommodating a crew of more than 5,000.

They can carry a mix of more than 60 aircraft, including F-35 stealth fighter jets (only on Vinson), F/A-18 fighter jets, EA-18 electronic warfare aircraft, E-2 early warning and control aerial vehicles, as well as helicopters.

In the strike group, the aircraft carriers are joined by guided missiles which are responsible for the group's air defense and anti-submarine warfare.

Destroyers and cruisers are also armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles to strike targets hundreds of miles away from the carrier group.

A fast attack submarine, which can also fire Tomahawk cruise missiles, often cooperates with a strike group, but the US Navy rarely reveals the specific movements and locations of its submarines./ CNA
