Pope Leo XIV has reiterated the Church's calls for disarmament and peaceful dialogue.

The Holy Father spoke of his growing concerns about the Middle East.

"The situation in Iran and Israel has seriously deteriorated," the Pope told pilgrims inside St. Peter's Basilica.

"At such a delicate moment, I wish to strongly renew an appeal for responsibility and reason. Our commitment to building a safer world, free from the nuclear threat, must be pursued through respectful encounters and sincere dialogue," the Holy Father declared.

Leo XIV said that it is the duty of all countries to embark on paths of reconciliation and promote solutions, based on justice, fraternity and the common good, to build lasting peace and security in the region.

"No one should threaten the existence of another," he said.

Pope Leo XIV emphasized in his messages that, "War is always a defeat."

“In the name of human dignity and international law, I repeat to those responsible what Pope Francis said: “War is always a defeat.” And Pius XII: “Nothing is lost with peace, everything can be lost with war.”

Pope Leo XIV also called for a halt to the conflict in Gaza and Ukraine.

"The heart of the Church is torn by the cries coming from war zones, especially from Ukraine, Iran, Israel and Gaza. We must not become accustomed to war, but rather we must reject as a temptation the lure of powerful and sophisticated weapons."/ CNA
