The resistance that started the secession of Kosovo from Serbia

In the late 1990s, a war broke out in Kosovo between Kosovo Albanians and Serbian forces, which left over 13,000 people dead and thousands more missing - most of them Albanians.

The war ended in June 1999, following a NATO air campaign against military and police targets in the former Yugoslavia.

After 78 days of attacks, the bombing ceased on June 10, 1999, with the adoption of Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council.

This resolution was a compromise of the five permanent member countries of the Security Council, based on which, a United Nations administration, known as UNMIK, was established in Kosovo.

UNMIK would administer the transitional phase until the establishment of local institutions and the permanent settlement of Kosovo's status.

NATO's intervention in Kosovo enabled the return to their homes of more than 800,000 refugees, displaced persons inside and outside Kosovo.

After nine years, on February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia.

Today, 15 years later, Kosovo's independence is recognized by over 100 countries, including the USA and most of the countries of the European Union./REL
