The latest United Nations report reveals gruesome details about the murders of women and girls around the world.

According to the UN report, 140 women and girls around the world die every day from partner or family member violence. The report by UN Women found that 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed by men in 2023, with 60% (51,100) of these killings being committed by someone close to the victim. The organization said its figures show that the most dangerous place for a woman is often her home, where most femicides occur.

Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, deputy executive director of UN Women, said: "What this information tells us is that it is the private and domestic sphere of women's lives where they should be safest, where many of them are actually being exposed to violence deadly."

She also added that the figures presented in the report are only the "tip of the iceberg", as not all causes of death are registered as femicide, while there are many areas where data cannot be accessed.

As the report showed a decrease in the total number of intentional deaths of women worldwide compared to 2022 (89,000), it also revealed an increase in the number of women killed by intimate partners and family members.

The report also showed that Africa had the highest rates of intimate partner and family-related femicide, with an estimated 21,700 victims in 2023, followed by the Americas.

In Europe and America, most women were killed by intimate partners, while in other regions, close family members were the main perpetrators.

The report also highlighted a stark disparity in homicide statistics: While men accounted for 80% of all global homicide victims in 2023, only 12% of those deaths were due to lethal domestic violence, compared to 60% of women's deaths attributed to partner or family member violence.
