Hungary's right-wing government has issued a decree requiring doctors to show women seeking abortions the vital signs of the fetus. This obligation represents a tightening of relatively liberal abortion rules in Hungary.
The decree states that health personnel must provide pregnant women with "a clear and identifiable indication of fetal vital signs" before proceeding with any abortion procedure. This rule goes into effect on September 15.
The government also inserted in the Constitution of 2011 the part that "the life of the fetus must be protected from conception", but again it tried to tighten the abortion rules.
Hungarian lawmaker from a right-wing party, Dora Duro, wrote on Facebook that her party, "Our Motherland" has submitted this new request, adding that the Government has approved this request to force pregnant women to listen to the heartbeat of the fetus before performing an abortion.
"This is the first pro-life decision since abortion was approved in 1956, breaking the taboo of decades," she wrote./ REL
