Five Iranian women's rights activists have been sentenced to a total of more than 20 years in prison, sources told RFE/RL.

Nina Golestani, Anahita Hejazi, Anahita Dostdar, Rosita Rajaei, and Nagin Adalatkhah were arrested in the northern city of Rasht in November last year, along with several other activists.

They were sentenced to three years and six months in prison each for "assembly and conspiracy" and seven months and 16 days in prison each for "propaganda against the regime".

Rasht experienced massive protests during the "Women, Life, Freedom" demonstrations. These demonstrations were organized following the death in custody of Mahsa Amin in September 2022. Amin had been arrested on suspicion of not wearing the headscarf properly.

Her death sparked a huge wave of protests that gripped all of Iran.
