Iran rejects European calls for restraint from attacks on Israel

Iran's Foreign Ministry said calls for restraint in an attack on Israel made by France, Germany and Britain "lack political logic and are contrary to the principles of international law."

The three European countries a day ago issued a joint statement through which they called on Iran and its allies to refrain from attacks against Israel, after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States. The United States and the European Union – in Tehran on July 31.

Tehran and its allies, Hamas, and the Lebanese group Hezbollah - designated a terrorist organization by the US - have blamed Israel for the killing. The Israeli government has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh's murder.

"Without any objection to the crimes of the Zionist regime [Israel], the statement of the three European states shamelessly asks Iran not to answer for the violation of its sovereignty and its territorial integrity," said the spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Nasser Kanaani.

He added that Tehran is determined to retaliate against Israel and called on the three European countries "to stand up against the war in Gaza and the incitement of war by Israel".

The US said the other day that Iran could carry out retaliatory attacks on Israel this week, while US President Joe Biden has been talking to his European counterparts about the situation in the Middle East.

Iran's threats to attack Israel come as the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas continues.

The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, when more than 1,200 people were killed and 250 were kidnapped.

As a result of the Israeli offensive, about 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza./Rel
