Over 47 thousand victims in Europe last year, due to high temperatures

More than 47,000 people died in Europe due to extremely high temperatures in 2023, and countries in the south of the continent suffered the worst consequences, according to a report by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) released on Monday.

Last year was the world's hottest on record. As temperatures continue to rise due to climate change, Europeans living in the world's fastest-warming continent face growing health risks.

The death toll in 2023 – lower than the 60,000 heat-related deaths the previous year – would have been 80% higher had it not been for the past 20 years of measures to help people adapt to rising temperatures, such as early warning systems and improvements in health care, according to the Spanish research center's report.

"Our findings show that during this century, steps have been taken for society to adapt to higher temperatures, which have dramatically reduced the consequences of heat and mortality rates, especially among the elderly," says Elisa Gallo, researcher at ISGlobal and author of the study.

The researchers used death and temperature data from 35 European countries. They estimate that 47,690 died from causes related to the high temperatures. Greece, Bulgaria, Italy and Spain were the countries with the highest death rate from the heat./ Voa
