Record world coal use in 2024

Global coal use is expected to hit an all-time high in 2024, the International Energy Agency has said, as the year ahead is likely to be the warmest on record.

Despite calls to stop burning humanity's dirtiest fossil fuel that is fueling climate change, the ANE has said it expects global demand for coal to reach record numbers for the third consecutive year, reports AFP.

Scientists have warned that planet-warming greenhouse gases must be drastically reduced to limit global warming in order to avoid catastrophic effects on Earth and humanity.

Earlier in December, the European Union's climate monitor Copernicus said 2024 would "almost certainly" be the hottest on record - breaking the record set by the previous year.

The "Coal 2024" report of ANE, published on Wednesday, predicts that the world will reach the peak of coal use in 2027, as this year alone it has surpassed the figure of 8.77 billion tons.

But this will depend on China, which during the last quarter of a century has consumed 30 percent more coal than the rest of the world together, ANE said.

China's growing demand for energy has been the biggest factor behind the increase in coal use, as more than a third of the coal used in the world is carbonized in its power plants.

Rising demand for coal in China, as well as in emerging economies such as India and Indonesia, minimized the ongoing decline in advanced economies.

However, this decline has slowed down in the EU and the United States of America. Coal use there is expected to decrease by 12 and 5 percent, respectively, compared to 23 and 17 percent in 2023./REL
