Lajçak: Kosovo should establish the Association, Serbia should recognize

The special representative of the European Union for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajçak, has expressed his happiness that Brussels, with Pristina and Belgrade, have successfully concluded the negotiations for the implementation of the 2023 Declaration on Persons Disappeared during the war in Kosovo.

A day after the meeting held with the chief negotiator of Kosovo, Besnik Bislimi, and with that of Serbia, Petar Petkovic, Lajcak praised them for, as he said, good cooperation and constructive trilateral talks.

Lajcak said that the agreement on the implementation of the Declaration for the missing was "an important step that will eventually bring closure to the families".

According to the Red Cross, there are still 1,612 people missing from the war in Kosovo.

The European emissary has warned that Brussels will soon host the first meeting of a Joint Commission, while Bislimi has said that this commission will start dealing with the issues that belong to it from January 2025.

Kosovo and Serbia reached an agreement in 2023 on the Joint Declaration on missing persons, within the dialogue for the normalization of relations mediated by the European Union.

The commitments made with this statement include: full access to reliable information, including those with classified status; making available all important documents for determining the fate of missing persons, as well as joint work through a commission chaired by the European Union.

But, until now, none of these have been implemented in practice.

The European emissary said that he reminded the parties that the normalization of relations means integration in the EU, and that the two processes are interconnected.

Lajcak also said that with Bislim and Petkovic they discussed the steps towards the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement: "the extension, the responsibility for the 2023 attacks, the reintegration of the Kosovo Serbs, the establishment of the Association of Serb-majority municipalities, the recognition of documents and symbols of Kosovo"./REL
