Tom Cruise is honored with the US Navy's highest civilian award

Tom Cruise has been honored with the US Navy's highest civilian honor for "outstanding contributions" to the military through his on-screen roles.

Cruise's 1986 starring role in Top Gun catapulted him to celebrity status, and the film's record-breaking success boosted military enlistment.

The Distinguished Public Service Award was presented to Cruise during a ceremony on Tuesday at Longcross Film Studios in Chertsey, Surrey.

The 62-year-old star expressed his gratitude for the honor.

"I admire all the military," Cruise said, standing next to US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, who presented him with a certificate and medal.

"I know in life, something that is very true to me, is that to lead is to serve. And I know that to the core. And I see that in servicemen and women."

Cruise starred as pilot Maverick in Top Gun, a film about Cold War flying aces, and was so influential that the Navy even set up recruiting tables in theaters.

The Oscar-nominated star reprized his role as Lt. Pete Mitchell in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which the Navy said "rekindled" military interest from audiences.

On Tuesday, Del Toro said, "Tom Cruise has spent nearly four decades as a steadfast supporter of the men, women and families of the Navy and Marine Corps."

Cruise was also praised for his roles in the action hits Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men and the Mission: Impossible.

Cruise was in Chertsey, Surrey while working on his upcoming film Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, due out in May 2025.

The prestigious civilian honor was previously awarded to Oscar winners Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks for their work in the World War II film Saving Private Ryan./ CNA
