Pentagon prepares to send 3,000 more troops to Middle East

The Pentagon is preparing to deploy about 3,000 troops from the Army's 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, adding to the thousands of Marines already deployed to the region to assist with operations in Iran.

Foreign media reports that no decisions have been made on the entry of troops, but the troop buildup is a drastic escalation in the US-Israeli war against the Iranian regime and increases the possibility of American soldiers going to Iran.

The 82nd Division has a rapid reaction force that can deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours, but it is not clear whether this division will go to the region.

The troop surge comes a month after US military airstrikes against Iranian forces and infrastructure, and amid soaring gas prices as Iranian officials block access to the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes.

The US already has 50,000 troops in the region, and the increase suggests the potential for more involvement, such as taking control of the strait by force. The defense officials who confirmed the deployment were granted anonymity to discuss internal planning./CNA
