After 10 years of negotiations/ EU-Australia trade agreement reached, feta and

The EU and Australia have reached a major trade deal after nearly a decade of negotiations.

The aim of the agreement is to remove most tariffs, increase trade between the two economies and strengthen strategic ties.

The agreement is expected to bring billions in economic benefits to both parties.

One of the most controversial issues was the naming of food products.

The EU seeks to protect so-called geographical indicators with names such as feta, parmigiano reggiano, prosecco, as they are linked to European origin and tradition.

Australia wanted to continue using these names for its products because they have become part of the domestic industry.

After negotiations, Australia may continue to use some names such as "parmesan" and "feta" under certain conditions.

For "prosecco", it can be used domestically, but will be gradually phased out for export over about 10 years. /CNA
