French army chief: US, an increasingly unpredictable ally

The head of France's armed forces, Fabien Mandon, said today that US foreign policy decisions are becoming more difficult to understand.

Speaking about the launch of US military operations against Iran, Fabien Mandon said that he was surprised by his American allies. 

"We were surprised by an American ally, which remains an ally, but which is becoming increasingly unpredictable and does not even bother to inform us when it decides to launch military operations. It has an impact on our security and it has an impact on our interests. We intervened in Afghanistan at the request of the Americans, who invoked Article 5 of NATO, and they chose to withdraw without informing us. They have now decided to intervene in the Middle East without informing us ," Mandon said. 

French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke with his US counterpart Donald Trump last week about the conflict, previously said the country was not a party to the conflict in Iran.

He also said France would not help "open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz in the current context" - something Trump has sharply criticized Western allies for - but would carry out naval escorts if necessary after the fighting stops. /CNA
