MEPs approved a series of proposals on migration, including one that calls for EU members to share the burden of housing migrants who land during peak periods.

The approved proposals form the basis of the parliament's position on the controversial topic of migration, ahead of negotiations with EU member states. The EU is giving member states a year to reform their asylum system before planned Europe-wide elections in May 2024.

"If we lose this chance to do this right, I don't think we'll have another one," Spanish Socialist MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar was quoted as saying by the Associated Press news agency. His message was "Hey, listen, if it ain't gonna happen this time, then it ain't never gonna happen."

However, diplomats say that so far there does not seem to be any step forward regarding the issue of forced relocation of immigrants from one country to another.

What does the new proposal contain?

EU MEPs propose that if an EU country is hit by a massive and shocking wave of migrants, an EU-wide crisis mechanism would be activated to share responsibility for incoming migrants.

This means that migrants can be moved from one country to another based on "reasonable connections" they may have in some of the member states. These connections include family ties, cultural similarities, or ties to a place where they may have previously studied.

The idea is that a well-intentioned relocation will discourage migrants from searching in the future for a better place to settle, which prolongs the problem.

Countries such as Italy, Greece and Malta, where large flows of migrants have arrived across the Mediterranean in recent months, have called for burden-sharing.
