Unemployment in Kosovo last year reached 11.8 percent. Meanwhile, two thirds of the population was of working age.
The unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of last year reached 11.8 percent and two thirds of the population in Kosovo are of working age.
This is stated in the report "Results of the Labor Force Survey, fourth quarter 2022", presented by the Kosovo Statistics Agency (ASK), adding that over 38 thousand unemployed were less than in the same period of the previous year.
"The active population was 29,508 people less than in the same period of the previous year, while the inactive population was 27,010 less. Employed persons were 8,789 more than in the same period of the previous year.
The agency says the employment rate was 2.3 percent higher than in the same period the previous year.
"The percentage of employed men was 4.1 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the percentage of employed women was 0.3 percent higher than in the same period of the previous year. The unemployment rate was 7.2 percent lower than in the same period of the previous year. Whereas among young people (15-24 years old), the unemployment rate was lower by 15.6 percent than in the same period of the previous year.
The report claims that women had the highest rate of inactivity.
"The rate of inactivity continues to remain quite high at 61.5 percent, increasing by 0.6 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The rate of inactivity among women was very pronounced at 78.8 percent, compared to men at 44.2 percent," the report states.
KAS shows that trade, construction and education lead to employment.
"The economic sectors leading with employment continue to be trade with 18.7 percent, construction with 12.1 percent, education with 10.3 percent, public administration and defense with 9.2 percent and production with 8.2 percent."
In the end, the report shows that women were mainly employed in the education sector, while men were employed in trade and construction.
"Women were employed, mainly in the education, trade and health care sectors with 55.2 percent of them. Whereas, men were mainly employed in the sectors of trade, construction, public administration and defense, production, as well as in the sectors of activity for accommodation and food service with 62.6 percent"./Revista Monitor
