Pope Leo XIV: God rejects the prayers of leaders who stain their hands with blood

Pope Leo XIV said today that God rejects the prayers of leaders who start wars and stain their hands with blood, in an unusually harsh statement as the war in Iran enters its second month.

Addressing tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, the Pope said war cannot be justified. 

"This is our Lord: Jesus, the King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war, Jesus does not hear the prayers of those who make war, but rejects them, saying: 'Even though you pray many times, I will not listen to you: your hands are stained with blood,'" Pope Leo said, quoting a biblical verse.

The Roman Catholic leader did not mention any specific world leaders, but he has increased his criticism of the war in Iran in recent weeks.
