Funding bill failed to pass/US government shuts down

The US government has shut down after senators failed to pass a funding bill.

US President Donald Trump has threatened cuts and placed the blame squarely on Democrats.

The government shutdown will suspend many government programs and services that are considered non-essential, with 750,000 federal employees potentially laid off at a total daily cost of about $400 million.

Services considered non-essential include the food assistance program, federally funded preschool, student loan servicing, food inspections and operations at national parks.

Members of Congress will continue to be paid, as their salary is required by the US constitution, while the military must work, but will not be paid.
