On October 12, the implementation of new rules for entry into the EU begins

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kosovo has notified its citizens that the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) at the borders of the European Union will begin on October 12, with the aim of accelerating border controls.

This system is biometric and records the entries and exits of citizens of non-EU countries and collects fingerprints and photographs, eliminating stamps in the passport.

This system was scheduled to come into effect in November last year, but was postponed at the last minute as some countries were not yet ready to implement it.

European authorities have announced that this system will be gradually implemented at the external borders of the 29 European countries over six months. This gradual implementation will give authorities, passengers and the transport industry more time to adapt to the new procedures, European authorities have said.

The system was created in November 2017. It is expected to apply to nearly 60 countries, including those in the Western Balkans, for the entry of their citizens into the EU, as well as to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, which are part of the Schengen area.

Passports in all Western Balkan countries are biometric; fingerprints and a photograph are stored on the chip, and are fully harmonized with the conditions required by the European Union, so that Western Balkan countries can benefit from the visa-free regime.

The implementation of this system has raised fears that there will be long queues and waits for people travelling to Europe by train, ferry and plane./REL
