An indictment is filed against a suspect for war crimes in Kosovo

The Special Prosecutor's Office of Kosovo (PSK) announced on Tuesday that it has filed an indictment against a person with the initials DM, suspected of war crimes against the civilian population during the last war in Kosovo.

The suspect, who belongs to Serbian nationality according to the Prosecutor's Office, is accused of having committed crimes as a prison guard in Pristina and Lipjan during the 1998-99 war in Kosovo.

"In the capacity of an official and in collaboration with other prison officials...they had systematically mistreated the Albanian prisoners, inhumanely torturing them with various means, actions sanctioned according to local laws, customs of war and the Geneva International Conventions and Additional Protocols", says the PSK announcement.

He is accused of the criminal offense of "war crimes against the civilian population".

The prosecution said that he is accused of another criminal offense, "unauthorized ownership, control or possession of weapons".

The prosecutor's office did not provide further details on whether the suspect was arrested or not.

In early December, the Special Prosecutor's Office said that so far it has filed a total of 33 indictments, involving 89 people, for war crimes in Kosovo.

During the last war in Kosovo in 1998-99, over 13,000 civilians were killed and thousands more disappeared.
