Ukraine says it has destroyed a Russian ship in Crimea

Ukraine's Air Force said on December 26 that it had destroyed a Russian Navy ship near the Crimean Peninsula suspected of carrying drones that Moscow intended to use in the war against Kiev.

"At around 02:30 [local time] on December 26, the Air Force attacked the large aircraft carrier Novocherkassk of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation with cruise missiles in the Feodosia area," the Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement. published on Telegram.

Feodosia is home to a large naval base on the occupied Crimean Peninsula.

A preliminary announcement by Ukrainian authorities said Novocherkassk was "destroyed", adding that "people say it was carrying Shahed" - referring to the Iranian kamikaze drones that Russia regularly uses against Ukraine.

The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Olechtchouk, has published a video showing an explosion at the Russian naval base in Feodosia.

Sergey Aksyonov, the Kremlin-backed leader of Crimea, and the Defense Ministry said one person was killed and two wounded in the attack in Feodosia.

Aksyonov confirmed "an enemy attack has been carried out in the area of ??Foedosia".

"The port area is closed for traffic," he said.

"So far, the explosions have stopped and the fire has been contained. All relevant services are on site. Residents of some houses have been evacuated," he added in the post published on Telegram.

The Interfax news agency quoted the Ministry of Defense as saying that Ukraine launched missiles from planes to attack Feodosian.

Ukraine, which has been facing Russian occupation since February last year, often attacks targets in Crimea, especially those of the Russian military.
